Wanderers produced an outstanding performance against a team that is a League above them. At last it all gelled together as Wanderers have been working hard at training and new coach Alex Burnie has brought his experience to the forwards in particular , they dominated the scrum all match. The backs also upped their game with some fine performances. It was the nearest yet to Wanderers best squad. The visitors played into the strong wind in the first half and had the better start helped by Wanderers giving away several penalties one of which allowed the visitors to be first on the scoreboard with an unconverted try through their forwards. 5 – 0 after 3 minutes. The match was being played with pace from both sides and rucks were being fiercely contested and some barging runs by forwards Graham , Robb and Hoodless were testing the visitor’s defence. After 15 minutes Wanderers Co Captain McDaid was on hand to finish off a maul drive to score a converted try to put the home side deservedly in front 5 – 7. With half time approaching the visitors had one final sortie at Wanderers line scoring through their forwards 12 – 7. Wanderers backs who had been playing well finally produced a move from their own half to send winger Storie over on half time to level the score at half time 12 – 12.
With the wind at their backs Hillhead the visitors would be looking to add to their tally and after 10 minutes they took the lead with a slick handling move through their backs to score in the corned 17 – 12. Wanderers had a couple of injuries to Co Captain Murray and Houston in the backs , who had a fine game. Strachan and Boag were the replacements. The platform for a victory by Wanderers was finally realised when forward Campbell was driven over for a converted try and take the lead 17 – 19. Wanderers were now dominant in every area of the game and ran in 2 tries from Galbraith from a fine run and Boag who ran a lovely line to score to see the game out comfortably .17 – 31.
Elsewhere the Ladies 1st XV defeated Hillhead 12 – 5 in their League opened in some horrendous playing conditions.
The Ladies 2nd XV lost to Marr in an away friendly fixture.
U14s lost 48 – 24 to GHA away.
U13s lost 38 -12 to Ardrossan away.
