Wanderers took on a Cartha Q P. select at Fort Matilda in a charity match in aid of Danny Tonner, a local lad, who continues his battle with MND.
An unusual sunny day greeted the players, and a young supporter brought the match ball onto the pitch on his miniature electric car to start the match.
Wanderers were very quickly off the mark and a score from Jamie Dale in the 2nd minute got the scoreboard moving 7 – 0, however Cartha quickly responded charging down a kick from the home side to run in under the posts 7 – 7.Play was end to end with defences on top but a fine mazy run from Ross Darroch put the home side in the lead again on the 18th minute 14 – 7 and again the visitors responded after a fine run by their stand – off 14 – 14. 2 quick tries by Wanderers Campbell and a mazy run from Fabio Marturano from inside his own half made the half-time score 28 – 14.
Numerous substitutions were made by both sides during the break as the warm weather was sapping their energy. The second half was dominated by Wanderers scoring 4 tries 2 from Jack McDaid , giving him a hat trick, 1 by Ciaran Hutchison and the other by Blake Lacey. Cartha had 2 further tries, one of them another interception to make the final score 52 – 24 to Wanderers.
The days trophy , kindly donated by The Trophy Box was presented by Andrew Deegan, Danny’s best mate to Wanderers captain Chris Vize, unfortunately Danny was unable to attend the occasion due to illness , the best wishes to him and his family were expressed by both sides and Wanderers members to him. Thanks to Cartha and all who attended and donated and Club member Bryan Reddy for refereeing and coaches Kenny Lang and David Strachan.
Overall, a great day was had by all with much fundraising completed, £1020 total.
