1st XV v Hamilton Match Report

Wanderers entertained Hamilton who won the first match narrowly which could also have gone either way. Due to injuries and work shifts Wanderers selection was finally made just before kick off. The pitch had been passed playable earlier in the morning after the rain on Friday evening. Wanderers opted to play with the strong wind in the first half to allow them to put up a score that could be defended in the second half. It looked like the same again for the home side when they were 14 – 0 down by the 6th minute in fact Wanderers had none of the ball unto the 12th minute when Co Captain kicked a penalty. 14 – 3.

 In the 12th minute it looked as though had scored a try in the corner but it was chalked off due to a previous knock on. Wanderers were more in the match with the forwards getting ball for the backs with some good runs by McGroarty and Tyley they then had a dominant period with tries from Tyley twice and winger Brodie taking them to a lead 24 – 14 at half time. Hamilton made an early inroad to Wanderers lead, from a scrum on half – way they got the ball out to their backs and scored after 5 minutes 24 – 19. There then followed a period of play between the 22s Wanderers line – out was working well with Cameron and Campbell combining to give the backs good ball which they could not turn into points to break the deadlock.

 The visitors attacking intent remained and the local supports fear of losing the slender lead held by the home side was realised in the 28th minute their forwards won a ruck in midfield and gave their winger an easy run in under the posts 24 – 26 a further penalty for the visitors took them further away from the home side 24 – 29 in the 34th minute. Wanderers had to put a phase together to get a win in the time left and step up the trio of McGroarty Tyley and Harrison who crystallized to allow Harrison to finish with a sensational try converted by McDaid to win the match with the last kick of the match celebrated by the large local crowd. Harrison also marked his 100th appearance for Wanderers.
