Mens 1st XV v Whitecraigs

Wanderers secured their first points of the season at home to Whitecraigs with a very good team effort helped by the inclusion in the side of available stalwarts which had a marked impact in the performance. The home side yet again had a lazy start and the visitors , who were playing into the elements, played most of the first 5 minutes in Wanderers half . The home side slowly worked their way into Whitecraigs half and were rewarded with a try through the backs for McGroarty in the corner. 7 - 0. It was turning into a very entertaining match despite the elements and both defences were on top. It took until the 21st minute for a further score and it was for the home side after some good passing through the backs allowing Tyley to run in for the score 12 - 0. The visitors were bright and breezy and had some passing ability in the backs which led to a score in the 24th minute 12 - 5. In the forwards there were crashing runs from Robb, McDonald and Hoodless one of which lead to a try for Robb. 17 - 5. At this stage Wanderers were looking to add to their tally but Whitecraigs were defending gallantly and forced their way up the pitch to score on half time. 17 - 10. Wanderers were now facing a strong wind and rain with a slender lead however the home side added to their score through McGroarty with a fine finish. 22 - 10. The home side put themselves in a lot of grief when Hopkins and Robertson were yellow carded for a high tackle and a ruck infringement down to 13 men Wanderers were defending desperately and on the 25th minute the visitors scored 22 - 15. Two minutes later the visitors turned further pressure and capitalised their advantage with a further try under the posts 22 - 22. after 30minutes. Wanderers made changes with McDougal being replaced at scrum half by Knox. The home supporters were nervous for the last 10 minutes but Wanderers rallied rally well from their own half the backs ran the ball through the hands allowing Tyley to jink his way over for a try under the posts.
29 - 22. The last 5 minutes were absorbed in end-to-end rugby with both sides looking for further scores and to the delight of the home support it was Wanderers who had the final say when centre Houston ran over to score the final try on the whistle for full time. 36 - 22.
